Director: Amy Heckerling
1995’s Clueless solidified Amy Heckerling’s (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Look Who’s Talking) status as a box office smashing director, reinvented the “teen movie,” and inspired a nationwide rush on plaid skirts. Loosely based on Jane Austen’s character Emma, Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is California royalty who rejects unwanted attention with a firm, “as if!” and spends her time shopping, accruing speeding tickets with equally envied BFF Dionne (Stacey Dash), and arguing with her step-brother Josh (Paul Rudd). After failing as a matchmaker, getting rejected by a Luke Perry look-alike, and at risk of being usurped by new it-girl Tai (Brittany Murphy), Cher takes a fresh look at Josh and undergoes a change of “inner direction.”
