The Extraordinary Caterpillar

Event •
Apr 14

About the film: Over 98% of the living world on Earth is smaller than a bee. Yet humans view the planet as a world centered around themselves. Landscapes are deconstructed to suit human needs, often with little regard for the natural systems that sustain the food web. The Extraordinary Caterpillar follows the scientists and community activists with this peek into the dazzling world of nature’s tiniest superheroes.

There will be a discussion following the film with Dr. Eric Lopresti, and Dr. Carol Boggs, faculty members of the Biology Department at USC, and several graduate students that are organizing The City Nature Challenge.

The City Nature Challenge is a four-day international event where cities around the world work together to document local biodiversity in urban and nearby natural areas.

Using the free iNaturalist app, participants can simply take photos of plants, animals, and other wildlife they encounter and upload them to contribute to a global scientific effort. These observations are reviewed by a community of experts who help identify each finding, often down to the species level.

It’s easy to get involved—just download the app, take a photo, and share what you find!
