Soul Power is an electrifying 2008 documentary that transports audiences to Kinshasa, Zaire, during the iconic Zaire 74 music festival—a historic celebration of music, culture, and Black Power. Directed by Jeff Levy-Hinte, the film captures legendary performances by James Brown, Miriam Makeba, B.B. King, Bill Withers, Celia Cruz, and many more, alongside candid behind-the-scenes moments of artists and organizers uniting for a global cultural milestone. Originally tied to the postponed “Rumble in the Jungle” boxing match, the festival stands on its own as a powerful symbol of artistic and political expression.

Soul Power is praised for its vibrant archival footage shot by renowned cinematographers, including Albert Maysles. It skillfully weaves music and activism, showcasing stirring performances and impassioned reflections from artists and cultural leaders like Muhammad Ali, who underscores the event’s importance to the global Black empowerment movement.
