Silents Synced – Buster Keaton x R.E.M.
Cinema and music collide in an unforgettable way with Silents Synced, a bold reimagining of classic silent films set to the sounds of legendary rock albums. This screening features Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Jr. synced with R.E.M.’s Monster (1994) and New Adventures in Hi-Fi (1996), creating a wholly unique cinematic experience where timeless visual storytelling meets the energy of groundbreaking music.
ABOUT THE FILM:
Released in 1924, Sherlock Jr. is one of Buster Keaton’s most inventive and visually stunning silent films. Keaton stars as a humble movie projectionist who dreams of becoming a great detective. When he’s wrongfully accused of theft, he dozes off while screening a film and dreams himself into the on-screen mystery, where he becomes the brilliant detective Sherlock Jr. The film is packed with Keaton’s signature jaw-dropping stunts, groundbreaking special effects, and an imaginative narrative that blurs the line between dreams and reality. In fact, Keaton reportedly broke his neck performing one of the film’s many daring sequences—just one example of his fearless approach to physical comedy.
Hailed as one of the greatest silent comedies ever made, Sherlock Jr. was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress and remains a testament to Keaton’s genius. Pairing this visionary work with R.E.M.’s genre-defining soundscapes brings new depth and emotion to an already remarkable film.
Before the film, a short will play, The Balloonatic, with music by Amon Tobin. The Balloonatic is a 1923 American short comedy film co-directed by and starring Buster Keaton.
