Ran
In a mad world, only the mad are sane.
Akira Kurosawa’s epic masterpiece Ran is a sweeping, visually stunning adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear. Set in medieval Japan, the film follows Lord Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsuya Nakadai), who decides to divide his kingdom among his three sons—a choice that sets off a chain of betrayal, war, and tragedy.
Celebrated for its breathtaking cinematography, intricate set design, and unforgettable performances, Ran earned international acclaim, including the Academy Award for Best Costume Design (1986) and multiple nominations across the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Japanese Academy Awards. It was also named Best Foreign Language Film by both the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle.
In 2015, Ran underwent a meticulous 4K restoration by Studiocanal and Kadokawa. Using the original negative, the restoration was completed frame by frame, with color grading approved by Masaharu Ueda, one of Kurosawa’s cinematographers and a close collaborator.
A landmark achievement in world cinema, Ran is both a devastating human tragedy and one of the most visually striking films ever made.
