Is This Thing On? is Bradley Cooper’s warm, witty, and deeply human comedy-drama about love, partnership, and the uncomfortable—but often funny—transition into life after a marriage ends. Co-written by Cooper, Will Arnett, and Mark Chappell, and loosely inspired by the life of British comedian John Bishop, the film stars Arnett and Laura Dern alongside Andra Day, Amy Sedaris, Sean Hayes, Christine Ebersole, Ciarán Hinds, and Cooper himself.

The story follows Alex and Tess, a long-married couple navigating the tender, awkward phase of separation while raising their two sons and trying to stay connected to the life—and people—they built together. As Alex stumbles into an unexpected new hobby, he’s pushed into moments of genuine self-discovery, reexamining who he is, what he wants, and how to move forward with grace…and a sense of humor.

Critics have singled out Cooper’s “unassuming” and emotionally grounded direction, the intimate cinematography by Matthew Libatique—especially during Alex’s stand-up sequences—and the sharp, empathetic performances of Arnett and Dern, whose chemistry brings both vulnerability and bite to this bittersweet story.
