Part of the Spooky Spawn: Reproductive Body Horror and Perverse Parenthood series with the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at USC. All presentational and marketing materials were designed by South Carolina Honors students from Dr. Elliott’s Gender and Monstrosity in Horror Films class.

On an otherworldly island inhabited only by boys and their mothers, Nicolas finds a corpse with a starfish on its belly. When he tells his mother and she returns only with the starfish, he begins to suspect that the island’s women are not what they seem. After watching their surreal ceremonies, undergoing strange surgeries, and befriending a sympathetic nurse, Nicolas begins to comprehend the disturbing nature of maturing in this isolated dystopia. As his understanding evolves, his plight reflects the emotional turbulence of adolescence.

“Spooky, tantalizing and beautifully shot and designed, ‘Evolution’ creates a cinematic world that’s utterly sui generis…. It’s an impeccable, creepy and genuinely transporting movie.” NYT Critic’s Pick
