Blue Moon
Blue Moon is a lyrical biographical comedy-drama from director Richard Linklater, starring Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott. Inspired by real correspondence between lyricist Lorenz Hart and aspiring designer Elizabeth Weiland, the film follows Hart over a single night in 1943 as he slips away from the historic opening of Oklahoma!, the first blockbuster musical by his former partner Richard Rodgers. At Sardi’s restaurant, Hart grapples with his fading career, his complicated desires, and his lingering hope for love—reflecting on a creative partnership that shaped the Golden Age of Broadway even as it left him behind.
The film had its world premiere in the Main Competition of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, where Andrew Scott won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance, marking a major highlight of the festival. Praised for Linklater’s intimate direction and Scott’s standout role as the sharp, soulful bartender Eddie, Blue Moon has been celebrated as a poignant, character-driven portrait of one of American musical theater’s most complex figures.
