An Inconvenient Truth

By far the most terrifying film you will ever see.

What if the most urgent story of our time was being told one slide at a time? In this landmark documentary, director Davis Guggenheim follows former Vice President Al Gore as he delivers his now-legendary multimedia presentation on the realities of climate change, a talk he estimates he gave over 1,000 times to audiences around the world.

More than a lecture, An Inconvenient Truth is a deeply personal film. Gore weaves together striking scientific data, including Antarctic ice cores revealing CO₂ levels higher than at any point in the past 650,000 years, and photographic evidence of rapidly retreating glaciers across the globe, with reflections on the experiences that shaped his environmental convictions. The result is something rare: a film that is both a rigorous scientific argument and a compelling human story.

Premiering at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival to a standing ovation, An Inconvenient Truth went on to become a cultural touchstone. It won two Academy Awards — Best Documentary Feature and Best Original Song (Melissa Etheridge’s “I Need to Wake Up”) — becoming the first documentary ever to win both honors simultaneously.

Its impact stretched far beyond the theater. The film is widely credited with reigniting the global environmental movement and raising public awareness of climate change at an international scale. It has been incorporated into science curricula in schools around the world, and Al Gore’s work surrounding the film contributed directly to him being awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, alongside the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
