A League of Their Own

Once in a lifetime you get a chance to do something different.

Penny Marshall’s A League of Their Own is more than just a beloved sports film—it’s a celebration of resilience, sisterhood, and the groundbreaking women of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. A critical and commercial triumph, the film grossed over $132 million worldwide and was later selected for preservation in the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Set during World War II, the film follows the formation of a women’s baseball league as America’s pastime faces an uncertain future. When fiercely competitive Kit (Lori Petty) and her poised but reluctant star-catcher sister Dottie (Geena Davis) join the Rockford Peaches, they must navigate rivalries, personal ambitions, and the gruff coaching of washed-up ex-ballplayer Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks). With a stellar ensemble cast, including Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell, A League of Their Own delivers heart, humor, and unforgettable performances.

Filled with iconic moments and a rousing blend of comedy and drama, this film isn’t just about baseball—it’s about the women who changed the game, both on and off the field.

The film will have an introduction beforehand with Maureen Ryan from USC. Bio: Maureen Ryan (she/her) is Research Assistant Professor of Film and Media Studies at the University of South Carolina. She is the author of Lifestyle Media in American Culture: Gender, Class, and the Politics of Ordinariness (Routledge, 2018) and the co-editor of Emergent Feminisms: Complicating a Postfeminist Media Culture (Routledge, 2018).
