Description

Rather than depicting reality, Chronicles of a Lying Spirit (by Kelly Gabron) interrogates how Black history is shaped and mediated by film and mass media. Through her alter ego Kelly Gabron, Cauleen Smith constructs a fabricated artistic biography drawn from scrapbook images, text, and layered narration. As the female voice gradually overtakes a male narrator, the film exposes the instability of representation, repeating its collage to reveal how meaning shifts with perspective.
