Sentimental Value
Directed by Joachim Trier (The Worst Person in the World) and co-written with longtime collaborator Eskil Vogt, Sentimental Value is a quietly devastating family drama about memory, inheritance, and the complicated bonds between parents and children. The film follows sisters Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) as they reunite with their estranged father, filmmaker Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård), whose return to Norway reopens long-buried emotional wounds tied to art, ambition, and generational trauma. As past and present collide, Trier explores how love, resentment, and creativity are passed down—and sometimes painfully transformed—across generations.
Premiering in Competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, Sentimental Value won the Grand Prix and was widely hailed as one of the year’s most emotionally resonant films. The film continued its awards momentum with a Best Motion Picture – Drama nomination at the Golden Globe Awards, where Skarsgård won Best Supporting Actor. At the 98th Academy Awards, it earned nine nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Reinsve), and multiple acting nominations for its ensemble cast. With its intimate performances and searching, humanist perspective, Sentimental Value stands as a major achievement in contemporary European cinema and a poignant reflection on art’s power to confront—and heal—the past.
