The Secret Agent
Brazil 1977, a time of great mischief.
Set against the charged backdrop of Brazil’s military dictatorship, The Secret Agent is a gripping neo-noir political thriller from acclaimed director Kleber Mendonça Filho (Bacurau). Wagner Moura delivers a career-defining performance as Armando, a former professor forced into hiding as he navigates political persecution, personal loss, and the moral cost of resistance during Carnival in 1970s Recife.
Premiering in Competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, The Secret Agent emerged as the most awarded film of the festival—winning Best Director, Best Actor, the FIPRESCI Prize, and the Art House Cinema Award. The film went on to make history as the first Brazilian film nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes, where it also won Best Actor and Best Foreign Language Film, and earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best International Feature.
Blending political urgency with noir tension and moments of dark absurdity, The Secret Agent stands as a landmark of contemporary international cinema—and a powerful reckoning with history, memory, and resistance.
