The Testament of Ann Lee
A sweeping historical musical drama from director Mona Fastvold, The Testament of Ann Lee follows the extraordinary true story of Ann Lee, the visionary 18th-century spiritual leader who founded the Shakers. Spanning England and early America, the film traces Ann’s rise from obscurity through persecution, ecstatic religious devotion, and the creation of a radical movement grounded in gender equality, communal living, and transcendent worship. As Ann’s following grows, so does the danger around her—forcing her to defend both her believers and the utopian ideals that define her legacy.
The film premiered in the main competition of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Golden Lion, and went on to screen at nearly every major fall festival, including TIFF, BFI London, Chicago, AFI Fest, and more. Critics have widely praised the film’s ambition and atmosphere, with The New York Times naming it one of the Top 10 Films of 2025, calling it “a tale of beauty, ecstasy, and religious devotion… stunning in every frame.”
Amanda Seyfried’s transformative performance as Ann Lee has been hailed as the best of her career, earning Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice nominations and near-unanimous acclaim. Reviewers have described her work as “electrifying,” “dazzling,” and “award-worthy,” anchoring the film’s emotional and spiritual power.
