It’s not stealing if you don’t get caught.

Premiering in competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Palme d’Or, The Mastermind marks a bold new chapter in Kelly Reichardt’s career — a masterful blend of heist thriller and intimate character study. The film also screened at the New York Film Festival and Stockholm International Film Festival, earning widespread acclaim for its quietly gripping tension and richly textured 1970s atmosphere.

Set in 1970 Massachusetts, The Mastermind follows J.B. Mooney (Josh O’Connor), an unemployed carpenter and family man who plots to steal a series of Arthur Dove paintings from a small suburban museum. What begins as a desperate attempt to reclaim control over his life spirals into a meditation on privilege, rebellion, and the elusive American dream.

With standout performances from Alana Haim, Hope Davis, John Magaro, Gaby Hoffmann, and Bill Camp, Reichardt transforms the traditional heist movie into something altogether different — a story less about the crime itself than the quiet unraveling that follows. Described by critics as an “anti-heist film” and “an artful exercise in genre reinvention,” The Mastermind captures the moral ambiguity and restless spirit of a country on the brink of change.
