										Birth/Rebirth
Every body has potential.
Part of the Spooky Spawn: Reproductive Body Horror and Perverse Parenthood series with the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at USC. All presentational and marketing materials were designed by South Carolina Honors students from Dr. Elliott’s Gender and Monstrosity in Horror Films class.
Upon discovering that her late daughter has been brought back to life, Celie becomes ruthlessly determined to keep her child breathing, even if it means descending into immorality. Birth/Rebirth tells the story of a grieving mother, a mad scientist, and a child who simultaneously embodies creation and deterioration. A feminist interpretation of Frankenstein, the film portrays reproduction and female anatomy with gruesome imagery. Exploring the horrors of motherhood and childbirth, it poses an ethical dilemma: is it our place to interfere with the natural cycle of life?
“Motherhood is both mad and monstrous in ‘Birth/Rebirth,’ Laura Moss’s ultrasmart, ferociously feminist take on the Frankenstein myth…. The movie… resolutely records the gross indignities of everyday procreation.” – The New York Times
