Nickel Boys is a 2024 historical drama based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, directed by RaMell Ross and co-written with Joslyn Barnes. Inspired by the real-life horrors of the Dozier School for Boys, the film follows Elwood and Turner, two African-American boys navigating the brutal injustices of a segregated reform school in 1960s Florida. Their friendship becomes a poignant exploration of resilience, morality, and the fight for dignity amidst systemic oppression.

Premiering at the 51st Telluride Film Festival, Nickel Boys has been hailed as one of the top 10 films of 2024 by the American Film Institute. It garnered widespread critical acclaim and earned multiple major accolades, including a Best Picture nomination at the 97th Academy Awards, as well as nods for Best Adapted Screenplay. The film also received nominations for Best Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes and five Critics’ Choice Awards, cementing its place as one of the year’s most impactful cinematic achievements.
