Helen Hill Media Education Center

In our inaugural year, the all new Helen Hill Media Education Center at The Nickelodeon Theatre has achieved amazing success.

The Helen Hill Media Education Center  at The Nickelodeon Theatre serves the City of Columbia with a strong focus on under-served communities as well as the public at large. With a mix of in-house programs and off-site programs with several community partners, our 2013 inaugural year offered a unique blend of programming.

We partnered with Public Media Corps and SCETV for the ETV Youth Civil Rights Summit as well as our Latino Flash Film Festival. We launched Civil Rights Sundays a wonderful collaboration with Historic Columbia and Columbia SC 63 that has brought an entirely new audience to The Nick. Family Fun Day, our grade specific field trip program Reading Movies,  and Come Around My Way: A Youth Media Project – a beginner course that promotes High School students to intermediate advanced level programs – have created amazing opportunities to engage k-12 students in 21st Century Media Literacy skills.

With the launch of Indie Camp Remixed and our Summer Camps in June 2014, we look forward to broadening our educational programming and planting the seeds for the film and media artists of the future. Here is a brief overview and some photos and video of the HHMEC’s 2013 work – enjoy!
