Based on a novel by the celebrated Argentinian author Antonio Di Benedetto, Zama is an immersive, hallucinatory journey through a colonial dystopia. Set in the 18th century, the film is the story Don Diego de Zama, a Spanish officer stationed at a remote outpost and seeking transfer to Buenos Aires. Dreamily rendering de Zama’s increasing disorientation as he navigates the sweltering heat and petty frustrations, the film blends absurdism with historical drama to burn with a feverish intensity.

Directed by Lucrecia Martel.

In Spanish with English subtitles.
