One of the most important films of the New Queer Cinema movement, Van Sant based his haunting tale of Mike and Scott, best friends and hustlers in the Pacific Northwest, on Shakespeare’s HENRY IV. In search of his Mike’s mother, the two embark on a trip from Idaho to Italy, altering their friendship forever. Set at the height of grunge, the film solidified River Phoenix’s indie star status and remains one of Keanu Reeves most memorable performances.

Director: Gus Van Sant

1991. USA. 104 minutes. Rated R strong sensuality, language, and drug use.
